poetry in sickness

The mountain is still and quiet,

the heat of drought hanging over all;

vines becoming withered stalks,

berries and grapes shrinking to prunes,

roots grasping for hints of moisture

under a cracked and flattened earth.

Morning dews tease the respite,

yet the healing rains shade only the distance.
